These “double houses” were built by William Godfrey over 150 years ago. Godfrey sold the property to Charles Davis in 1857 and in 1903 it was sold to John Millard. Millard established Millard’s Workhouse on the site with accommodation for the workers. Across the street you will find Mill Lane, the former location of the Millard Wagon Works. From the late 1800’s until the advent of the automobile, this factory turned out wagons and carriages. The stone used in the manufacture of the wheels remains on the property.
During the 1920’s Clifford Millard operated the Bluenose Ski Company here. Skiers from all over North America were familiar with his product. The company also produced the ShooFly Rocking Horse that was featured in early Eaton’s catalogues. A pair of Bluenose Skis and a Shoo-Fly Rocking Horse can be seen at the Queens County Museum.
