The house was built in 1848 by Matthew McClearn. Purchased with its own wharf and warehouse, this allowed Captain McClearn to carry on a successful import/export business. Typical of Liverpool houses, pairs of rooms flank the entrance halls. The ground floor is light and airy, with nine-foot ceilings. On the exterior, five-sided Scottish dormers are set in the roof. Inside they extend to the floor.
