  • Upcoming construction: Weir lane Rehabilitation Project To Begin May 13, 2024

May 10, 2024; Liverpool, NS:  Since amalgamation in 1996, the Region of Queens Municipality has invested over $100 million in capital upgrades to infrastructure throughout Queens County. These upgrades have improved environmental conditions, provided safe streets, sidewalks, and drinking water, as well as quality recreational facilities. This work will continue in 2024, starting with infrastructure upgrades on Weir Lane.

The Weir Lane Rehabilitation Project will begin on Monday, May 13, 2024. This project continues work started in 2022 on Main Street and will replace deteriorated sewer and water mains, as well as install new storm drainage, and asphalt street surface.  Many of the water and sewer mains in Liverpool date back more than 100 years.  Upgrades to the water and sewer systems ensure that the Municipality’s infrastructure will remain functional for years to come.

As a result of the construction, Weir Lane will be closed to public traffic, with work areas open to local and emergency traffic only.  Residents with questions regarding the project should contact the Region of Queens Municipality’s Department of Engineering and Public Works at publicworks@regionofqueens.com or 902-354-7170.

  • Update: Status of Milton Centennial Pool

May 1, 2024:  The Milton Centennial Pool suffered significant damage in the unprecedented rainfall and flash flooding events in July 2023. As a result, the pool was closed to assess the damage and make repairs.

Unfortunately, repair work was not able to be completed in the Fall of 2023 and when staff uncovered the pool in April 2024, additional damage had occurred over the winter months. At the April 16, 2024 Special Council Meeting, the condition of the Milton Centennial Pool was discussed with Council. Staff were directed to engage industry experts to evaluate what repairs the 57-year-old pool would require. Staff returned during the April 29, 2024  Special Council Meeting to advise that the estimate received from experts to repair and reopen the pool was anticipated to be between $100,000 to $150,000, and take at least 12 weeks to complete.

As a result, the Milton Centennial Pool will not open in 2024. Municipal staff will work on options for Council’s consideration about the future of this pool. Staff will also continue to take the required steps for the new large heated outdoor pool, proposed to be constructed by Queens Place Emera Centre.

North Queens Aquatic Centre is expected to continue regular operations in 2024 and staff are exploring options for expanding opportunities to serve residents.

  • Region of Queens Municipality Approves 2024-2025 Budget

April 29, 2023; Liverpool, NS: Following several months of budget planning and deliberations, the annual Operating, Water Utility, and Capital Budgets for Region of Queens Municipality were unanimously approved at the April 29, 2024 Special Council meeting. The budget was approved with no increase to the previous year’s tax rate. Operating Budget total is $29.8 million, including Hillsview Acres. The 2024-2025 Water Utility Budget totals $1.25 million with a projected deficit of $442,122, and the Capital Budget total is $21.5 million.

“Queens is in a period of population and business growth and requires robust infrastructure, accessible recreational opportunities, and diverse services. Balancing those needs in a budget with Council’s desire to have no increase in tax rate due to economic challenges faced by many, made this year’s budget process challenging but we are happy to announce the base tax rate in all categories has remained the same as last year,” said Mayor Darlene Norman.

Region of Queens Municipality’s tax rates are inclusive of services such as fire services, street lighting, solid waste collection, and paving, which are often collected as area rates in other Municipalities. Tax bills will be mailed to property owners by the end of May, with taxes due upon receipt, however, if paid by June 30, 2024, no interest charges will be applied.

The 2024-2025 Operating, Water Utility and Capital Budgets will be posted on-line by the end of the week: https://www.regionofqueens.com/municipal-services/finance/financial-statement . The Special Council meeting of April 29, 2024 was live-streamed on Facebook and YouTube. Residents wishing to watch Council approve the budgets may watch the video on the Region of Queens Municipality’s YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCK2q2i7QSvBDBqS38uCApvQ/videos

  • Funding in Place for Outdoor Pool in Queens County

April 29, 2024; Liverpool, NS:  Big things result from collaborations. Provincial funding in the amount of $2.2 million was announced on Friday, April 26 to support an outdoor pool project initiated by the commitment of a large private donation, and funding from Region of Queens Municipality.  The $7.2 million outdoor pool project is planned to be built on the grounds of Queens Place Emera Centre, in Brooklyn, Queens County as a replacement for the 57-year-old Milton Centennial Pool.  The Municipal contribution to the project is $2 million.

“Partnerships between levels of government, private donors and volunteers who provide their expertise, result in significant community impact,” said Darlene Norman, Mayor of Region of Queens Municipality.  “Municipalities provide important services to the community such as recreational opportunities. Infrastructure such as trails, arenas, playgrounds, and pools help create a healthy lifestyle, as well as being attractive features for those looking to relocate their home or business here in Queens.  Growth benefits everyone, and we appreciate the support of the province in helping with the development and improvement of Queens County’s recreational assets.”

More than two years ago, Council received a commitment for a generous anonymous donation to be used to build a community outdoor pool in South Queens to replace the Milton Centennial Pool, which was starting to show significant signs of failure due to its age. The donors envisioned a pool large enough to provide various aquatic activities including hosting recognized swim meets. Council was supportive, and formed a community led Pool Committee with two Council members as members, and the Pool Committee researched the design, with accessibility as a priority.  Moving forward, the Pool Committee will remain involved in a supportive role through activities such as fundraising initiatives for additional components.

The 6-lane, 25 metre, outdoor pool will be heated, using the excess heat generated from ice production in the arena at Queens Place Emera Centre; this will enable the season to be extended earlier in the summer and later in the fall than the traditional outdoor pool season of July and August.

The outdoor pool project will soon go to tender for construction, with an anticipated opening for the 2026 season.
