  • Physical Activity Strategy Being Re-written

September 19, 2019, Liverpool NS: A strategy to guide the Region of Queens Municipality’s activities to encourage residents to lead healthier lifestyles is being developed, and public meetings and input will be very important to the process.

The Region’s existing strategy is 10 years old, and needs to be updated to reflect changing times and lifestyles. “The Region of Queens was one of the first municipalities in Nova Scotia to develop a Physical Activity Strategy, and it has served us well,” according to Mayor David Dagley, “but it is now out-of-date and needs to be re-written to reflect the current status and needs of our communities.”

A call for citizen representatives to form a steering committee to assist with this process had a large response, which Dagley says will add value to the process. “We conducted a call for Expressions of Interest for two citizens to sit on this group, and were delighted to get seven residents from throughout Queens who wanted to be a part of the group,” says Dagley. “Council appointed all applicants, as these residents represent most of Queens geographically, and their community knowledge and interest will be of great benefit to the final report.” The citizens appointed to this Committee are Dr. Celeste Johnson, Lindsey Reinhart, Stacy Thorburn, Mya Uhlman, Hubert Rodden, Taryn Jollimore, and Tara Smith.

The Steering Committee has met twice over the summer with various community representatives and stakeholders, and is now planning a series of public meetings to receive more feedback. The first two meetings are planned for Monday, September 23rd at 7:00 pm at the North Queens Community School, West Caledonia Road, Caledonia, and Tuesday, October 1st at 6:30 pm at the Liverpool Lions Hall, Gorham St., Liverpool. Meetings will also be held in Greenfield, Port Mouton, and Port Medway in early October. Details about dates and locations will be posted on the Region of Queens Website and Facebook page.

“Public attendance at these meetings is encouraged so the Region can produce the best and most effective strategy it can to guide our activities and allocate resources towards physical activity and healthier lifestyles” said Dagley. He noted that a final report is expected to be received by Council in December.

  • Beach Volleyball Court Now Open in Caledonia

August 15, 2019; Liverpool, NS:  Volleyball players in the North Queens area can enjoy a game on the newly restored beach volleyball court in Caledonia beginning on Thursday, August 15, 2019.  At the July 9, 2019 Region of Queens Municipality’s Regular Council meeting, Council approved a request to install a new beach volleyball court adjacent to the North Queens Aquatic Centre, where a beach volleyball court was built in 1997.  The newly constructed court is now open, and ready for organized programs and recreational use.

“Council is pleased to provide funds to install a new beach volleyball court in Caledonia.  Members of the community requested this municipal recreational space be developed, and with a recent resurgence of interest in the sport in the area, it will be a well-used site in the community,” said David Dagley, Mayor of Region of Queens Municipality. “The court will be usable for three seasons of play, and provide residents and visitors in Caledonia and area with another opportunity for outdoor recreation.”

The beach volleyball court was constructed to the guidelines and recommendations of Volleyball Canada.  The minimum size of a beach volleyball court for triples, fours and sixes to compete is an area of 46 feet by 79 feet with a sand depth of 12 to 16 inches, and a permeable liner laid under the playing surface to prevent weeds growing within the playing surface.  Approximately 180 tonnes of appropriate sand was required. Council approved funding of approximately $7,400 plus HST for the costs associated with the rebuilding of the court, funded from Region of Queens Gas Tax fund.  A new net system was purchased by local residents who fundraised in the community for its purchase.

Although the beach volleyball court has just opened, there are already an assortment of activities planned.  Members of the community have plans to run volleyball programs at the new court, and have tournaments planned as well.  Twice a week in August and September, there will be organized pick-up games of volleyball for ages 14 and up, held on Wednesdays from 6 until 8 p.m. and Sundays from 2 until 5 p.m., beginning Sunday, August 18, 2019.  A volleyball skills development clinic for ages 8 through 13 will be held on Tuesday, August 20, 2019 from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m.  A 4 on 4 Recreational Volleyball Tournament for ages 14 and up will be held from 10 a.m. until 7 p.m. on Saturday, August 31, 2019; six teams may register to play.  Another tournament is being planned for September, with the date to be announced.  For information on the tournaments, pick-up volleyball games or the volleyball skills development clinic, please contact Sheila Apostolofski at 902-682-7222.

The beach volleyball court is located at 9708 Highway 8, Caledonia, NS, beside the North Queens Aquatic Centre.
