August 2, 2024; Liverpool, NS: The Region of Queens Municipality is providing an update on the cleanup plans for the demolished vacant multi-unit dwelling at 89 Main Street, Liverpool, which caught fire earlier this year.
Following the fire, the Region erected a construction fence around the property for public safety. At the June 11, 2024 Regular Council meeting, a Dangerous and Unsightly order was approved, giving the property owner until June 18 to appeal or complete the requested cleanup and leveling of the property.
With no appeal received and no cleanup underway by the June 18 deadline, the Region began the cleanup process on behalf of the property owner. As the fire investigation was ongoing, various agencies needed to provide clearance for the cleanup to proceed.
Due to the risk of asbestos in the rubble, the Region conducted testing, which confirmed the presence of asbestos. As a result, the cleanup must comply with Nova Scotia Department of Environment and Climate Change regulations.
A contractor has been hired to install a specialized covering to contain the demolition rubble until it can be removed. Measurements have been taken, and the covering has been ordered, with arrival and installation expected by August 19.
The Municipality issued a Request for Proposals (RFP) on August 2, 2024, seeking qualified companies to complete the asbestos removal from the site. The RFP closing date is August 16, 2024.
Following the removal of the asbestos and other rubble, the property will be leveled. In cases like this, property owners are required to reimburse the Region for the costs incurred, or the costs become the responsibility of the property owner through a lien on their property.
As work begins on this site, there may be temporary road closures in the area. The Region will work with the contractor to ensure the public is informed of the work being done.
Municipalities are required to review electoral district boundaries regularly to ensure the number of districts and populations within each is equitable and with fair representation per Councillor. Following the review in 2023, there have been boundary changes in 3 of the 7 electoral districts in Queens; some residents may be living and voting in a different district than they have been assigned in the past, and locations for in-person voting will reflect those changes. For a map of Queens with the districts marked, click here, otherwise click on the map links below to see each district map.
Voters and those considering running as a Councillor or as Mayor should review the maps to determine the changes and the polling district that they reside or are intending to offer.

May 10, 2024; Liverpool, NS: Since amalgamation in 1996, the Region of Queens Municipality has invested over $100 million in capital upgrades to infrastructure throughout Queens County. These upgrades have improved environmental conditions, provided safe streets, sidewalks, and drinking water, as well as quality recreational facilities. This work will continue in 2024, starting with infrastructure upgrades on Weir Lane.
The Weir Lane Rehabilitation Project will begin on Monday, May 13, 2024. This project continues work started in 2022 on Main Street and will replace deteriorated sewer and water mains, as well as install new storm drainage, and asphalt street surface. Many of the water and sewer mains in Liverpool date back more than 100 years. Upgrades to the water and sewer systems ensure that the Municipality’s infrastructure will remain functional for years to come.
As a result of the construction, Weir Lane will be closed to public traffic, with work areas open to local and emergency traffic only. Residents with questions regarding the project should contact the Region of Queens Municipality’s Department of Engineering and Public Works at publicworks@regionofqueens.com or 902-354-7170.
May 5, 2024: Beginning Monday, May 6, sewer repairs will be completed on Birch Ave., Liverpool. Traffic Control Persons will be in place. Your patience is appreciated while this necessary work takes place.
May 1, 2024: The Milton Centennial Pool suffered significant damage in the unprecedented rainfall and flash flooding events in July 2023. As a result, the pool was closed to assess the damage and make repairs.
Unfortunately, repair work was not able to be completed in the Fall of 2023 and when staff uncovered the pool in April 2024, additional damage had occurred over the winter months. At the April 16, 2024 Special Council Meeting, the condition of the Milton Centennial Pool was discussed with Council. Staff were directed to engage industry experts to evaluate what repairs the 57-year-old pool would require. Staff returned during the April 29, 2024 Special Council Meeting to advise that the estimate received from experts to repair and reopen the pool was anticipated to be between $100,000 to $150,000, and take at least 12 weeks to complete.
As a result, the Milton Centennial Pool will not open in 2024. Municipal staff will work on options for Council’s consideration about the future of this pool. Staff will also continue to take the required steps for the new large heated outdoor pool, proposed to be constructed by Queens Place Emera Centre.
North Queens Aquatic Centre is expected to continue regular operations in 2024 and staff are exploring options for expanding opportunities to serve residents.
