Public Notice: Upcoming Construction – Main Street Pedestrian Safety & Accessibility Upgrades

The intersection of Main Street and Market Street in Liverpool will have upgrades made to improve pedestrian safety and accessibility.  The project is expected to begin the week of September 28, 2026 with work continuing through to the beginning of November, weather and site conditions permitting. 

The purpose of the project is improved pedestrian safety and accessibility,  while maintaining safe and efficient vehicle movements through the intersection.

There will be a realignment of traffic lanes, with the dedicated right-turn lane adjacent to the Post Office being combined with the centre lane, resulting in a single ‘straight-through and right-turn’ lane. The change in lane configuration will shorten pedestrian crossing distances at the controlled stop points and provide a more pedestrian-friendly intersection.

There will also be accessibility improvements made, including the installation of Tactile Walking Surface Indicators (TWSIs) at all four corners of the intersection to assist pedestrians with navigation and crossing.

Improvements to accessible parking in the parking area at the Post Office will also be completed as part of the overall accessibility upgrades.

During construction, motorists and pedestrians may experience temporary traffic disruptions, changes to pedestrian routes, construction noise, and temporary changes to parking and access, particularly in front of the Post Office. Every effort will be made to maintain access to local businesses and properties throughout the project.
