Queens County has a wealth of buildings, structures, and landscapes which are of great historical significance. Some of these are officially recognized by the various levels of government, some are recognized through books and other publications, and some are only recognized locally. Many of these properties have played an important part in the development of our communities. Some have been homes to our founding citizens, some have provided a place for worship, and some are just plain old. Our built-heritage is an important link to our past, and in recognizing this , we can help to ensure that these valuable assets are around for future generations to enjoy.

One of the ways of protecting and rehabilitating buildings, structures, or other places of historical significance is to have them officially recognized and registered as heritage properties.

Heritage designations can be bestowed at the federal, provincial and municipal levels.

  • Properties which can be identified as being significant in terms of the history of Canada may qualify for federal designation as a National Historic Site.
  • Properties which can be identified as being significant in terms of the history of Nova Scotia may qualify for provincial designation.
  • Properties which can be identified as being significant in terms of our local history may qualify for municipal designation.
